County Histories

This is a selected list of county histories (plus a few town histories) published mainly before 1900. Such histories are more likely to give family information than modern histories, albeit of the leading families in the county. If you have authentically traced your lines in the major sources of said county back to around 1700, links may begin to emerge with these families. Even though the histories may reproduce original sources, the information should be considered second-hand requiring further research to verify all of the possible connections. County histories may even provide clues to the origins of English emigrants to the Americas before 1800. Unfortunately, these histories may not be easily accessible and many lack indexing. It would be a boon to research to have a master index online to the key histories for all of the counties.

The approach of this list is to use a short title and in most cases to skip the place of publication and publisher. The emphasis is to help the researcher find the available histories in both the FHL and BYU libraries. The official name of the main library on the BYU campus is the Harold B. Lee Library (hereafter HBLL). It should be noted that the use of Q and Quarto in the call numbers of the FHL and BYU respectively indicate oversized books that are kept in a location separate from the regular book shelves. Some of the histories are online at BYU. Check the HBLL Catalog for the electronic connection to such books online. These books may also be available on Google Books, FamilySearch Books, Ancestry.com, or Archive.org.
