1609-1810, Index/Original Wills are online at Ancestry.com. This site does not include the registered copy wills or other types of probate records, which see below. This is a fee site but free to those using the computers at the FHL or in the family history section of the BYU library.
Microfilmed Calendar/Probate Records for the
Archdeaconry of Middlesex (Middlesex Division)
1608-1810, Calendar (FHL & BYU Film 94737, item 1)
This modern calendar is arranged in chronological order by the initial letter of the surnames. In addition to the original wills, it provides an index to the registered copy wills and act books by volume and folio number. It also gives references to other types of probate records.
The microfilmed collection of probate records for the Middlesex Division of this court seems to be complete, with the exception of the Original Wills, 1664-1665, and probably most of those for 1662-1663. Note the online collection for Original Wills described above. The records for this court were filmed on three different occasions with some overlap in coverage. The first filming in 1952 is cataloged with the Essex & Herts. Division. The result is some confusion between the records for the two divisions.
The second filming of the Original Wills is complete from 1666-1779. The first film number in this series is FHL 806345. For the pre-1666 wills, use the first filming on FHL & BYU film 94738. For 1780-1810, see FHL film 94764. The Registered Copy Wills are on FHL films 94721-94728, and the Act Books on films 94779-94783. The starting film for the Administration Bonds, 1667-1741, is 588039. The caveat books, an assignation book, and inventories start with film 811290. An apparent index to the inventories was filmed in 1997 and has been cataloged as 2081716, item 2. There are also warrants and renunciations that begin with film 806847.
NOTE: Where an initial film number is given, use either version of the FHL catalog to see all of the films in that collection. The previous version at FamilySearch may be a little easier to use for that purpose.
